Project Two: Collage and Synthesize

Create an interactive experience that lets users mix and combine fragments into new forms.

Begin

Look at the work of artists and designers who collaged and synthesized a range of materials and objects into new wholes. How can you create an interactive collage that expresses your interests and also encourages your audience to re-arrange and re-imagine the graphic elements on the screen?

Prepare

Gather the materials and objects you plan to collage. Look for juxtapositions and affinities in the things you collect. Sketch on paper an arrangement of images inspired by the materials you’ve gathered. Edit and refine your sketches. Map out an interface and interactive approach that allows your audience to manipulate your images. Gather sounds that amplify the interactive experience.

Build and Test

Scan, import, or digitally re-draw the elements of your interactive collage. Create your initial composition in code. Add drag-and-drop interactivity and test out the ease of use. Show your project to two or three friends and watch as they interact with the project—write down moments of confusion or frustration and then rework your interface and interaction to improve usability.

Organize your folders and files so they’re web-ready. Refine your code—add comments, increase your code’s legibility, and enhance your code’s architecture. Upload your project to the web and test it out on a variety of hardware-software platforms.
